Relic (Relic Trilogy 1) by Bronwyn Eley

A fatal job. A deadly jewel. How long will Kaylan survive?

Snatched from her life as a blacksmith, Kaylan Rove is forced to become the Shadow: the personal servant of a ruthless and powerful lord.

But Lord Rennard himself isn’t the threat. It’s the Relic he wears around his neck – a stone that protects his bloodline, but poisons everyone else in its proximity. Kaylan’s life becomes a waking nightmare as the Relic slowly destroys her body and mind.

But just as hope begins to fade, she discovers a rebel plot that might put an end to Rennard’s rule…

If you like dark fantasy, strong heroines, slow-burning tension and plot twists that will leave you reeling, check out Relic, the first book in the addictive YA fantasy series The Relic Trilogy.

Amazing.

Kaylan is one day thrust from her work as a blacksmith into being a Shadow, the one who takes the brunt of a powerful Relic worn by Lord Rennard. Now, she has to fight to keep herself alive, in more ways than one.

I absolutely loved diving into this novel. The characters were very well written and my heart broke for Kaylan, her family, Jesper (Rennard’s wife) and Markus (Master of the Hunt and the best dog lover).

This novel is very character driven, without losing parts of the plot to keep the reader involved and engaged. I had a hard time putting my kindle down today.

The conflicts in this novel were relatively simple: power corrupts and people will do anything for power. The way that Lord Rennard came into that power was fascinating and I would love to know more about the Relics that are scattered throughout the world.

I must admit I somewhat expected the ending to occur, though not in the same way. Despite my seeing through some of the twists, I greatly enjoyed seeing the world through Kalyan’s eyes and watching the world change through her experiences.

I look forward to reading more from the author, this was a wonderful debut to start with.

Bronwyn joined the military right out of high school, where she learnt (among other things) to disassemble and reassemble a rifle blindfolded. After that she spent a lot of her time travelling around the world. Her favourite places (so far) are Scotland, Mongolia, Iceland and Ireland. Bronwyn finally found her natural habitat when she landed her first job in the publishing industry. While she has always been a writer, it was only when surrounding herself with books that she realised her life’s dream was to become an author. Relic is her first novel. Bronwyn lives in Sydney and spends her time eating chocolate, reading and practicing her martial arts.
