Meet Kara Hartman, a photojournalist who is hiding her magic from the world. Traumatized by her brother’s death, she wants nothing more to do with magic. But just when she thought she could neglect her gift, it becomes apparent that the universe has other plans for Kara. When she discovers that an old foe has broken out of prison, hellbent on destroying her new life, Kara has no choice but to embrace the only power that can stop her.
In the Midst of Magic is an action packed fantasy novel that brings magic and mysticism into modern day society.
The reader is placed directly into the action with very little world building. This allows for better immersion into the story. Small amounts of the bigger world view is given throughout the novel to ensure there is not too much confusion of society at large.
The main protagonist in this novel is Kara, a young woman who has turned away from her mystic powers due to a terrible event in her past. Kara is a complex character that slowly comes into her own as the novel progresses. I enjoyed the progress she makes in both her own self confidence and her relationships.
I did feel like some of the relationships were a little forced. A bit of the romance, while well done in its development, seemed like it didn’t quite fit with the rest of the storyline.
I enjoyed this mystical adventure full of intrigue, betrayal, and unlikely allies.
Thank you to the author for providing a free copy of this lovely novel. I am leaving this review honestly and voluntarily.
